Kodaikanal: 

Kodaikanal was established in 1845 by American missionaries and British civil servants as a summer retreat to escape the heat and humid summers of the plains. The town served as a vacation spot for the British during the colonial era and quickly became a popular hill station for the British Raj. After Indian independence, it has remained a popular tourist destination to this day.

Kodaikanal, often called the "Princess of Hill Stations," is a picturesque town nestled in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, India. Three main ways to reach Kodaikanal:

By Air: The nearest airport is Madurai International Airport (IXM), which is approximately 120 kilometres from Kodaikanal. It is easily accessible from several domestic cities, including Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, and Goa, as well as foreign locations such as Dubai, Singapore, and Colombo. The second nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport (CJB), which is 200 kilometres from Kodaikanal.

By Train: The nearest train station to Kodaikanal is Kodai Road train Station (KQN), which is approximately 80 kilometres distant. Several trains run between Kodai Road and major cities including Chennai, Bangalore, and Madurai.

Important attractions of Kodaikanal:

Coakers walk: 

Coaker's Walk is a beautiful, one-kilometre-long walking trail created on the highlands of Kodaikanal. Lieutenant Coaker built the walkway in 1872, and it bears his name. On a clear day, the trail winds along the edge of a steep mountain slope, providing panoramic views of the Pambar River Valley, the plains below, and even Madurai in the distance. It starts at Van Allen Hospital and connects to the main road above St. Peter's Church.

The pathway has fencing for safety and has a drop on one side. Surrounded by rich foliage, it provides spectacular views of the valley, hills, and mountains. You might even be lucky enough to see clouds rolling by beneath you, giving the impression of walking on air. Kodaikanal is famed for its cold and refreshing weather, thus Coaker's Walk is suitable for a stroll at any time of year. Along the walkway, there is an observatory that offers tourists a more expansive and clear perspective of the countryside. The pathway is walled on both sides for safety reasons, making it an ideal location for families with young children.

Bryant Park:

Bryant Park in Kodaikanal is a lovely botanical park founded in 1908 by H. D. Bryant, a forest officer from Madurai. The park, which covers 20 acres on the eastern side of Kodai Lake, is home to approximately 325 different types of trees, shrubs, cactus, and flowers. The park is a nature lover's heaven, with a diverse collection of flora from around the world. Flowering plants and hybrids, including towering trees, can be found alongside delicate flowers and fascinating cacti. There's even a 157-year-old eucalyptus tree from India's first war of independence! Bryant Park is especially beautiful during the summer months when the flowers are in full bloom and bursting with brilliant colours. In addition, the park conducts an annual flower festival in May, displaying the region's brilliant flowers and decorative plants, with over 85 types on display. The park includes a greenhouse with a collection of exotic flowers, ferns, and ornamental plants from around the world. The park acts as a practical instruction centre for ornamental horticulture as well as a student demonstration facility. Bryant Park provides a tranquil getaway amidst the quiet splendour of nature. Bryant Park is an excellent destination for families, with strolling routes, a children's play area, and plenty of space to rest. The park's serene atmosphere and picturesque surroundings make it ideal for a picnic lunch or a leisurely stroll.

Dolphin nose:

The Dolphin's Nose in Kodaikanal is a well-known viewpoint called after a flat, projecting rock that resembles a dolphin's nose. It sits at an elevation of 6,600 feet and provides beautiful views of the Palani Hills' lush green valleys, tumbling waterfalls, and distant mountains. Dolphin's Nose is accessible via a picturesque 3-kilometer journey through the Palani Hills' cool and refreshing pine forests and rocky terrains. The path itself is a lovely experience, and the viewpoint provides a genuinely breath-taking panoramic view that will leave you speechless. You might even come discover a secret waterfall or a little settlement along the route. The viewpoint provides some of the most breath-taking panoramic views of Kodaikanal. One can observe cascading waterfalls and lush green. There are tumbling waterfalls, luscious green valleys, and distant mountains that appear to stretch indefinitely. The major draw of Dolphin's Nose is unquestionably the stunning view it provides. The Palani Hills' sweeping hills, valleys, and waterfalls are visible for miles. The hike to Dolphin's Nose is modest and suited for most fitness levels. The trail is well-maintained and provides an opportunity to enjoy the splendor of the Palani Hills. Green Valley View:

Green Valley View, formerly known as Suicide Point, is a viewpoint in Kodaikanal. It provides a beautiful perspective of the plains, deep valleys, and hills below, with the Vaigai Dam serving as the focal point. While the name change reflects the beauty of the location, it is critical to exercise caution and remain behind the boundaries for your own safety. The valley below the viewpoint has a drop of around 5000 feet, hence the previous name. Fortunately, the area has been turned into a safe observation point with railings, allowing tourists to appreciate the magnificent magnificence. While the term "Suicide Point" refers to the valley's depth and potential danger, safety precautions have been taken to make the viewpoint a safe and attractive destination for travelers. The viewpoint is easily accessible by road and is approximately 5.5 kilometers from Kodaikanal Lake. The viewpoint provides a spectacular view of the plains, deep valleys, lush green hills, and Vaigai Dam below. Kodaikanal is famed for its cool and invigorating weather, thus Green Valley View is ideal for enjoying the outdoors at any time of year. The overlook is well-kept, with railings for safety.

Kodai Lake:

Kodai Lake is a stunning man-made star-shaped lake in the middle of Kodaikanal, hidden among the picturesque hills. Sir Vere Henry Levinge, Madurai's collector at the time, constructed it in 1863. The lake is a major tourist site and is regarded as the pearl of Kodaikanal. The lake was created by changing swampy ground into streams and building a bund. It is surrounded by lush green hills, providing a tranquil and attractive atmosphere. The lake's remarkable star-shaped form enhances its visual appeal. The lake covers 24 hectares (60 acres) and has an average depth of 3 meters (9.8 feet). The star form and central placement in town make it easily identifiable. The lake is surrounded by beautiful green hills from the Palani Hills range, which serves as the lake's main watershed. The lake is surrounded by a calm and beautiful ambiance. Pillar Rock:

Pillar Rock is located approximately 8 kilometers from Kodaikanal Lake. Pillar Rock is a series of three huge granite rock formations that stand shoulder to shoulder and reach heights of up to 400 feet. These rocks are a natural wonder and a renowned tourist attraction in Kodaikanal. The region between these two boulders is known as the Devil's Kitchen, which adds to the area's mystique and is a favorite photo location. The towering rock formations are a breathtaking sight and the consequence of millions of years of weathering. The vista from the top provides amazing views of the surrounding hills and valleys. They serve as a monument to nature's power and capacity to create breathtaking landscapes. The narrow gap between the two main boulders is known as the Devil's Kitchen or Guna Caves. Local stories surround this chasm, contributing to its mystique. It was called after a popular film that was shot here. The caves are thought to be home to bats, birds, and beehives. tiny Garden: Within the shadow of these massive pillars is a lovely tiny garden, ideal for a picnic or a leisurely stroll. Moir Point:

Moir Point is conveniently placed approximately 10 kilometers from Kodaikanal Bus Stand and roughly 3 kilometres from Pillar Rock. Moir Point is a magnificent viewpoint and historical monument at the entrance to the forest that leads to the beautiful Berijam Lake in Kodaikanal. It's a popular place for tourists to enjoy the spectacular views of the valleys and mountains. The location is named after Sir Thomas Moir, the engineer who started work on the Goschen Road (also known as Forty Mile Road) in 1929. A memorial honouring this event exists where the route meets the Kodaikanal-Berijam Lake road, recognizing his contribution to the region's infrastructure. The spectacular vista is, without a doubt, Moir Point's major appeal. The overlook provides a breathtaking picture of rolling hills, verdant valleys, and distant mountains. The Moir Point monument commemorates the area's history and Sir Thomas Moir's part in its development. It is the starting point of the Goschen route, a major route built in the early twentieth century. Moir Point provides a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of Kodaikanal town. Devil Kitchen or Guna Caves:

Devil's Kitchen is located near Pillar Rock, approximately 8 kilometers from Kodaikanal Lake. Devil's Kitchen is the traditional name for a collection of natural caves near Pillar Rocks in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, India. The caves are cloaked in mystery and local folklore. B.S. Ward, a British officer, discovered the caves in 1821. They were originally accessible but are now closed to the public due to safety concerns. There have been instances of disappearances and difficulties in finding bodies owing to the complicated cave system. The original name was Devil's Kitchen, due to the abundance of bat colonies in the gloomy caverns. The Devil's Kitchen refers to the gap between the Pillar Rock formations' two major pillars. This is a natural cleft with a spectacular perspective that is a popular location for photographers. While not exactly caverns, the tight gap and link with the ancient caves help to justify the name.

Special Remark: The caves have been covered in mystery and threat for many years. Legends surround them, and regrettably, there have been stories of persons disappearing after entering the caves, with no bodies recovered. Due to safety concerns, entry to the caves is currently prohibited. Tourists can only see the caves from a distance, behind a fence. Due of safety concerns, it is not accessible to the public.  

Pine Forest:

Kodaikanal has pine forests, the result of a plantation effort started in 1906 by a British officer, H.D. Bryant. These forests provide a lovely respite from the bustling hill station, with towering pine trees creating a cool, refreshing ambiance. This forest is in the southwestern portion of Kodaikanal, and the floor is covered in dried pinecones and needles, providing a distinct visual and smell experience. Near Moir Point. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking grandeur of the deep pine trees. The big trees, carpeted ground, and fresh mountain air provide a serene and refreshing atmosphere. The forest floor is covered in dried pinecones and needles, which creates a distinct visual and sensory experience. Take a stroll around the forest trails, breathe in the fresh air, or go for a leisurely horseback ride. Photography aficionados will have plenty of possibilities to snap breathtaking images of the pine trees and surrounding scenery. The pine forests are open to visitors year-round. However, the warmer months (March to May) provide excellent weather, and the monsoons (June to September) highlight the lush vegetation.

Chettiar Park:

Chettiar Park is a small but well-kept park on the way to Kurinji Temple, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Kodaikanal town and 3.2 kilometers from the bus stop. It's an excellent place to relax and take in the natural beauty of Kodaikanal, which is surrounded by lush vegetation and a variety of flowers. The Kodaikanal township established the park, which is commonly included on the walk to the famed Kurinji Temple and has a tranquil and calming atmosphere. The park was established in 1908 by the Chettiar Group, a wealthy commercial society from Tamil Nadu. It features flower beds with a variety of brilliant blossoms, including the rare Kurinji flower, which blooms only once every 12 years. The Kurinji flowers were last seen in the park in 2004. The park has well-kept gardens with various flower species and shrubs. The flower beds are decoratively structured, adding to the park's aesthetic appeal. The park is well-known for its Kurinji flowers, which bloom in a vivid purple and create a spectacular display while in bloom. While one may not be fortunate enough to see them due to their rarity, the park does present a wonderful display of other blooms throughout the year. The park also has a small play area for kids, making it ideal for families with young children. The park is well-designed, with planted flowerbeds and lush green grass that create a pleasing visual experience. Chettiar Park offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of Kodaikanal. Take a walk along the paths, take in the fresh air, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The magnificence of the park has been captured on film as well. It has been a popular location for shooting many commercial films.

Kurunji Andavar Temple:

The temple is located about 3 kilometers from Kodai Lake. The Kurinji Andavar Temple, also known as the Kurinji Murugan Temple, is a Hindu temple in Kodaikanal that honours Lord Murugan, the God of Hills. It was built in 1936 by Lady Leelavathi Ramanathan, a European who converted to Hinduism after marrying an Indian lawyer. It serves as a symbol of religious tolerance and cultural harmony. The name "Kurinji" relates to the Kurinji flower, which blooms in the neighbouring hills once every 12 years. It last bloomed in 2004. The shrine is named after this flower, and some people believe the honey made during the flowering season has curative benefits. The temple is designed in the Dravidian style, with towering entrances, beautiful carvings, and a serene environment. The temple is a prominent Hindu pilgrimage destination, particularly during the Tamil month of 'Thai' (January-February). The main deity worshipped here is Lord Murugan, also known as Kurinji Easwaran or Karuneeshwaran. There are also smaller shrines dedicated to other Hindu deities, such as Ganesha, Vishnu, and the Navagrahas (the nine planets). The shrine provides a peaceful respite from the bustle of Kodaikanal. Visitors can worship, contemplate, or simply enjoy the tranquil surroundings. Overall, the Kurinji Andavar Temple is an extraordinary combination of religious significance, historical relevance, and natural beauty.

Shenbaganur Observatory Museum:

The Shenbaganur Museum, also known as the Shenbaganur Natural History Museum or the Shenbaganur Museum of Natural History is located approximately 5.6 kilometers away from Kodaikanal Lake. The museum has an extensive collection of exhibits about the region's natural heritage. The museum's principal focus is on presenting the natural history of the Western Ghats region, specifically the flora and wildlife found near Kodaikanal. The exhibits feature a broad assortment of birds, mammals, insects, butterflies, reptiles, and plants. The museum also has an herbarium with about 2500 plant types. Gain knowledge of the geological structures and rocks found in the area. The museum features an astronomy component, which may not be as extensive as a specialized observatory. This part could feature exhibits about celestial bodies, astronomical phenomena, telescopes, and the history of astronomy in India. Aside from natural history and astronomy, the museum may include sections on anthropology (the study of human civilizations) and handicrafts, which showcase local tribal art and crafts. The museum is a significant educational resource for both students and tourists, offering insights into the natural world and local history. The Shenbaganur Museum provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the natural world, particularly the biodiversity of the Western Ghats region.

Silver Cascade Falls:

Silver Cascade Falls is a stunning waterfall found on the road to Kodaikanal, at an elevation of 2318 meters. It is located on the Ghat road, approximately 8 kilometers from Kodaikanal Lake. The water falls from a height of 180 feet, producing a breathtaking spectacle for observers. The falls are thought to be the consequence of overflow from Kodai Lake, a man-made lake created by uniting three distinct lakes. The water pours down rocks, creating a cascading effect and a silver color that inspired the waterfalls' names. Finally, as they descend the cliffs, the water accumulates in a pool claimed to have medical characteristics, making bathing in it a favorite sport, particularly during the hot summer months. The falls are stunning all year, but they are especially spectacular during the rainy season (June to September), when the water flow is at its highest.

Poomparai:

Poomparai is a lovely town in the Palani Hills, about 18 kilometers from Kodaikanal. Every year, Poomparai hosts the Ther Thiruvizha procession for Lord Muruga, which draws devotees during the Tamil calendar month of Thai or Maasi on the Kettai nakshatra. Mannavanur:

Mannavanur is a lovely village located about 35 kilometers west of the famed hill station Kodaikanal, tucked in the verdant hills of the Dindugul region. It is located in the upper Palani Hills, near the old "Fort Hamilton" location. The lake, formed by a dam with sluice outlets, is part of a micro-watershed development initiative. Periyakulam town that is 18.7 kilometers to the south, obtains its public drinking water from the lake. The lake's water quality is exceptional. Surrounded by beautiful woodlands, Berijam Lake provides a peaceful relief from the crowds as well as an opportunity to appreciate nature's splendor. Special Remark: To visit Berijam Lake, you require a permit from the District Forest Office in Kodaikanal. Arrive early, as permits are limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of cars allowed each day may be controlled. Confirm entry times and other requirements immediately with the Forest Department. Remember that permits are subject to daily availability, and cancellations may occur. The number of vehicles authorized is limited, therefore obtaining a permit on the day of your visit is not assured. The Forest Department may cancel permits without prior notice.
